Commentary for Chapter 107 - “Doyle”

First off, I have to ask, are the boys in the Rogue ever going to get somewhere. How annoying is that? Can we at least get a new advertisement????

That said, down to business. He’s fat, he’s ugly, and he can control your body. Ripped from the pages of old Batman Comics, the puppet master can control you. His power seems to be physical and not mental as his subjects can talk to him while he controls them. Wonder what his limits are? Sight? Distance? How many can he control at once?

We don’t get the pleasure of seeing HRG and his partner capturing Doyle but I think it is safe to say that the Haitian would be the obvious choice followed by sleeping gas or just a clunk on the head catching him by surprise (Maybe Claude was still around).

We do learn that he has quite the short fuse killing his neighbor, childhood bully and an inconsiderate driver. For someone described as a recluse who enjoyed keeping to himself, he is either extremely stupid, careless, or just overconfident. Certainly the deaths would at least bring questions from law enforcement (except maybe the traffic accident). Back to his limits. He was cut off by someone and then shortly thereafter the guy crashes his car. While sight might still be one of his limits, he seems to be able to distance himself from the subject which might make him able to control people through a television monitor.

The art is fabulous in this GN. I really get a feel for what a slob Doyle is, HRG actually looks like Jack, and Elle’s Lightning Storm was exactly how I pictured it in my head. I enjoy the different perspectives we get each week. My only lament is that we didn’t have any hot Claire drawings to gawk at.

Then we meet Michael. Poor Michael, doesn’t he realize that anyone who is in a GN but not on the cast list is the Graphic equivalent of a red shirt on the original Star Trek? Still, he walks in showing off his powers and griping about the company. Must be one of the bitter few who survived the Connie Logan saga on the down end of things. His sole purpose (other than to die) is to reinforce the notion that you are either with the company or against the company. Then, when Elle spits lightning, Doyle is released. He now seems cognizant of two things. 1) his powers and 2) that the little box was keeping him from using them and is no longer an obstacle.

All in all, a good novel. We really see that Doyle is a cold-hearted killer. Whether he was really that way when he came in or if two years in Level 5 made him that way, it doesn’t matter. All that matters is he is confident that he can take care of anything the company throws at him. He leaves us with a zap and, in a grim, Hannibal Lecter sort of way, he kills Michael (”…smells like chicken”) and is on his way to get some dinner.

  1. I enjoyed this graphic novel. Watching this guy at the end of the episode was cringe worthy. I wonder how meredith knew doyle?

  2. Yes, the art in this GN was great. I completely felt the same emotions towards him as I did the end of 3.05. Too bad that we didn’t get any more backstory on Stephen Canfield, although I guess that’ll be revealed in the AT.

  3. Personally, I think it was too soon for a GN on Doyle. We only saw 30 seconds of him in the episode. A GN on Stephen Canfield would have been much more appropriate. They should’ve saved the Doyle GN for next week, after we’ve been more thoroughly introduced to him.

  4. Next week would have been a good time depending on what happens to him in the TV episode. You’d think an entire production team would realise that, but they might have a more important GN planned for next week that needs to be released then in order for it to tie in with the show.

  5. The worst thing abou the GN is that it doesn’t give us much insight into Doyle other than that he is a ruthless killer and he can control people while they still have independant thought and activate their powers. Not much in the way of a backstory though. Kind of a fluff piece actually. So it didn’t really matter if they waitied till next week or not.

  6. I thought what little we saw on Doyle on TV was scary enough… now the GN… it’s a wonder I don’t have nightmares about him.

  7. Doyle is creepy but he seems easy to take down if you can surprise him. Also wonder if Echo would be able to use his power against Doyle if Doyle had control. The others could speak so why couldn’t Echo use his powers.

Would hate for Doyle to get control of Peter or Syler though.

Here is my prediction based upon the coming attractions. Doyle makes Claire kill her mom. Then he makes Claire kill herself. Doyle makes a fatal error however in that he doesn’t know Claire is invulnerable. She then heals and kills Doyle thus hastening her move to the dark side.

  8. Did I mention that Claire’s development is very similar to Anakin Skywalker’s. Factions pulling at both sides, raised by people who aren’t her parents. (postulating ) Mom to be killed and she is helpless to prevent it, Told she isn’t ready to handle it. She is ripe for the emperor (pinehearst) to get her to join them.
